Tips for writing a nursing student resume
List each clinical rotation with unit and hours
Clinical rotations are your main experience, so give each one a line with the specialty, unit type, bed count if you know it, and hours. Add what you did, such as how many patients you cared for or which skills you practiced. Put your capstone or most relevant rotation first when you tailor the resume.
Treat CNA and tech work as patient care experience
Paid roles like CNA, patient care technician or EMT show you can handle a real assignment. Include your patient ratio, unit type and any safety or quality results. Name the facility clearly, since many hospitals hire externs and new graduates from their own staff.
Put BLS and your expected graduation date up front
Most clinical postings require BLS, so list it with the issuing organization, such as the American Heart Association, and the expiration date. Show your BSN with 'Expected May 2027' so reviewers know your timeline. Never list an RN license until your state board of nursing issues it.
Include academic wins that nurse managers value
A strong GPA, Dean's List, nursing honor society membership, simulation work and evidence-based practice projects all belong on the resume. Keep them short and inside your education section. If your GPA is not a strength, leave it off and let clinical hours lead.
Keep it to one page
A nursing student resume should fit on one page. Cut high school details, unrelated jobs from several years ago and long coursework lists. Use the space for rotations, patient care work and certifications.
Match the posting and protect patient privacy
Externship and residency postings often name specific units, EHR systems and skills, so mirror that language wherever it is true, such as 'telemetry,' 'Epic' or 'patient education.' Describe patients only by population, like 'postoperative adults.' Never include names or details that could identify a patient.
