How do you turn a job description into resume bullets?

Pick 5 to 7 duties that match the job you are applying for, not every task you did. Start each with an action verb, then add a number where you can, such as transactions per shift, tables served or orders picked. The bullet examples on each page show what that looks like for a first job and for an experienced worker, such as a head cashier or head teller.

When should you use a job description instead of a resume example?

Use a job description page when you already have a resume and only need stronger wording for one role. Use a full resume example when you are starting from scratch and want a layout and Word template too. Many people use both: the duties from the job description and the structure from the example. Before you apply, the ATS keyword checker compares your resume with the posting.

Frequently asked questions

How many duties should you list for each job on a resume?

List 5 to 7 duties per job, chosen to match the posting you are applying to. Start each with an action verb and add a number when you can.

Can you copy a job description into your resume?

Use the duties as a starting point, not a script. Keep only the tasks you actually did, reword them in your own voice and add results, since a copied list reads like a job ad rather than proof of your work.

What is the difference between a job description page and a resume example?

A job description page focuses on one role: duties, bullets by experience level, skills and a sample posting. A resume example shows a complete resume for a role, with a free Word template you can edit.
