Tips for writing a financial analyst resume
Give the size of the business you supported
A forecast for a $20M department and one for a $2B company call for different skills. Put scale in your bullets, such as revenue, cost base, number of cost centers or number of plants. Hiring managers use it to judge whether you are ready for their scope.
Show accuracy and speed, not just ownership
Writing 'responsible for the monthly forecast' says little. Show what improved, such as forecast accuracy, cycle time, close days saved or errors removed. A reliable pattern is action, then model or tool, then a measured result.
Explain variances in business terms
FP&A leaders want analysts who can say why the numbers moved. Include at least one bullet that shows you broke a variance into drivers like price, volume, mix, timing or headcount, and name who acted on your explanation.
List your planning and ERP systems by name
FP&A teams run on specific tools, such as Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan or Oracle EPM, plus an ERP like NetSuite or SAP. List the ones you have used and match the spelling in the posting. The ATS keyword checker can show which terms you are missing.
Use the right wording for exams in progress
CFA Institute does not allow candidates to imply a partial designation, so write 'Passed Level I of the CFA Program' rather than 'CFA Level I'. List credentials like the FPAC from the Association for Financial Professionals or a CPA license only after you have earned them.
Keep the format clean and conservative
Finance hiring managers expect a traditional one-column layout with clear dates and consistent number formats. Write money the same way throughout, such as $2.3M and $480M. Skip charts, icons and text boxes, which some applicant tracking systems read poorly.
