Which email do you send after an interview?

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours to each person who interviewed you. Then wait until the date the employer gave for a decision. If they gave none, send a follow-up email about one week after the interview, keep it under 150 words, and stop after two or three tries spread over about three weeks.

How do you handle a job offer by email?

Decide first whether to ask for more. If you negotiate, use the salary negotiation email guide before you accept anything in writing. When you say yes, the acceptance email should confirm the title, pay, start date and any terms you negotiated. When you say no, declining by email works for most offers, though a call comes first if you built a close relationship with the hiring manager.

Whatever you send, close with a sign-off that fits the relationship. The email sign-off guide rates 40 options.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thank-you email the same as a follow-up email?

No. A thank-you email goes out within 24 hours of the interview, while a follow-up email asks for an update after the decision date, or about a week later if the employer gave none. Send the thank-you first and save the follow-up for later.

How many times should you follow up after an interview?

Stop after two or three tries spread over about three weeks. Keep each message under 150 words, restate your interest and ask politely for an update.

Should you accept or decline a job offer by email?

Email works for most offers. Call first if you built a close relationship with the hiring manager or if you are declining after you already accepted, and sign any formal offer letter the employer sends when you accept.
