Tips for writing a high school student resume

Treat activities like jobs

Clubs, sports, volunteering and neighborhood jobs can go in an Experience section with a title, organization, dates and bullets. Employers filling entry-level jobs want proof that you are reliable and get along with people, and these entries show it. Add numbers wherever you can, such as hours, people helped or dollars raised.

Count babysitting, lawn care and pet sitting

Self-employed work is real work experience. List it with a title like 'Babysitter (Self-Employed)' and describe the ages of the kids, the number of families or clients, and how long you have done it. Repeat clients and referrals show that people trust you.

Include your GPA if it helps you

Add your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher, along with honor roll or other awards. If it is lower, leave it off and highlight relevant classes, attendance or improvement instead. Always include your school name and expected graduation month and year.

List your availability

Managers building part-time schedules need to know when you can work. Put your availability in your summary, such as weekday evenings after 3:30 p.m. and weekends. Use a simple email address with your name and keep your voicemail greeting professional.

Keep it to one clean page

A high school resume should fit on one page. Use a simple layout, a clear header and no photos or graphics. Our resume header guide shows exactly which contact details to include.

Ask before you use someone as a reference

Teachers, coaches, club advisors and the families you babysit for make good references. Ask their permission first, and bring a separate reference list to interviews instead of listing names on the resume itself.

Practice before the real thing. Got the interview? Take the matching interview quiz and get instant feedback on every answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a resume with no work experience in high school?

Start with your contact information and a short summary, then list your school, expected graduation date and GPA if it is strong. Add an Experience or Activities section with clubs, sports, volunteering and self-employed jobs like babysitting or yard work. Finish with skills and any certifications, such as first aid or CPR.

What skills should a high school student put on a resume?

Include practical skills like cash handling, computer programs, typing and any second language, plus personal strengths like reliability, teamwork and time management. Back each one up with an example in your experience section when you can.

Should I put my high school on my resume?

Yes. While you are in high school or recently graduated, your school is your main education entry, so list it with your expected graduation date. Once you finish college or a training program, you can usually remove it.

Do I need a resume for my first part-time job?

Many entry-level jobs only ask for an online application, but a resume helps you stand out and makes filling out applications faster. It is also useful for internships, scholarships and volunteer programs.
