Tips for writing a new grad nurse resume
Put your license status near the top
Nurse recruiters need to confirm you can be licensed by your start date, so place a Licenses and Certifications section right after your summary. Once you pass the NCLEX-RN, list RN, the issuing board of nursing and whether the license is multistate under the Nurse Licensure Compact. If you have not tested yet, give your scheduled exam month.
Make the capstone your top experience
Your capstone or preceptorship is the closest thing to a real RN assignment, so list it first with the unit, bed count, hours and patient load. Add 3 to 5 bullets that show assessment, medications, patient teaching and handoff skills.
Group the rest of your rotations
List your other clinical rotations in one entry with the total hours, then add a bullet for each rotation that relates to the unit you want. A critical care or emergency residency will look closely at those rotations.
Count your tech and CNA work
Patient care tech, CNA, EMT, scribe and unit secretary jobs show you already work on a care team. Give the unit type, patient load and tasks like ECGs, vital signs and specimen collection.
Match each nurse residency posting
Hospitals describe residencies by specialty and cohort start date. Mirror the unit names, skills and certifications in each posting, and name the specialty you want in your summary.
Keep it to one page and protect privacy
One page is enough for most new graduates. Never include patient names, dates of service or any detail that could identify a patient, even when you describe a quality project.
