Tips for writing a data analyst resume
Tie every tool to a business result
Writing 'used SQL and Tableau' tells a hiring manager very little. Show what the analysis changed, such as dollars saved, hours saved, accuracy gained or a decision it informed. A reliable pattern is action, then tool, then result with a number.
Match your tools to the posting
Analyst teams differ a lot: one may run on Power BI and SQL Server, another on Looker and BigQuery. List the tools you have actually used that match the posting, and spell them the way the posting does. Our ATS keyword checker can flag terms you are missing.
Add a portfolio link
Put a GitHub, Tableau Public or personal site link in your header next to LinkedIn. Pick 2 or 3 projects that show clean SQL, a readable dashboard and a written conclusion. If a reviewer clicks through, the project summary should state the business question first.
Entry level? Use a projects section
If you do not have analyst job titles yet, add a Projects section above your work history. Describe each project like a job: the dataset, the tools, the question and what you found. Public data from city open data portals or Kaggle works well.
Show the full workflow
Strong analysts do more than build charts. Include bullets that show you gathered requirements, cleaned and validated data, ran the analysis and presented a recommendation. This tells reviewers you can own a request from start to finish.
Group skills and keep them honest
Group your skills by type, such as languages, BI tools, data platforms and methods, so they scan quickly. Only list tools you could use comfortably in a technical screen, such as a live SQL or Excel exercise.
