Tips for writing a caregiver resume

Describe your clients without naming them

Families and agencies want to know who you have cared for, so describe clients by age group and needs, such as 'older adults with dementia and limited mobility.' Never include names, addresses or health details that could identify a client.

Show reliability with numbers

Hours per week, years with the same client, on-time visits and shifts covered prove you can be counted on. A missed visit can leave a client without help, so families and agencies look closely at this.

Put certifications and training up front

List any home health aide certification, CNA certificate, CPR and first aid, and dementia care training with the issuer. Under federal rules, aides at Medicare-certified home health agencies need at least 75 hours of training, and many states add their own requirements. Use the exact title your state issued.

Mention safety and health results

Falls prevented, early reporting of changes and recovery goals reached show that you protect the client. Credit the care team honestly, since nurses and therapists set the plan you follow.

Include driving and logistics

Many caregiver jobs include errands and appointments. If you have a valid driver's license, a clean driving record and a reliable car, say so in your summary or skills.

Stay within your role

Use words like 'assisted,' 'reminded' and 'reported' for tasks a nurse directs. Do not write that you gave medications or assessed clients unless your state and employer allowed it.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a caregiver resume?

Include a summary with your years of experience and the types of clients you serve, then list each job with the care you gave and numbers like hours, clients and years. Add certifications, CPR and first aid, languages and driving status. Keep it to one page.

How do I write a caregiver resume with no experience?

Family caregiving counts. Describe how long you cared for a relative, the help you gave and the appointments or medication reminders you handled, using the same format as a paid job. Add any training, such as CPR and first aid or a home health aide course.

What is the difference between a caregiver, a home health aide and a CNA?

Caregiver is a general title for anyone who helps with daily living. Home health aides work in clients' homes, and aides at Medicare-certified home health agencies need at least 75 hours of training. CNAs complete a state-approved nurse aide program and work mostly in nursing homes and hospitals.

Should I list private caregiving jobs on my resume?

Yes. Write 'Private family' or 'Private client' in place of the employer name to protect privacy, and give the city and dates. Ask the family before you list them as a reference.
