Tips for writing an accountant resume
Show your CPA progress honestly
Use 'CPA Candidate' with the sections you have passed and the next one scheduled, such as 'passed FAR and AUD, REG scheduled November 2026.' The CPA Exam has three Core sections (AUD, FAR and REG) plus one Discipline section (BAR, ISC or TCP), so naming sections shows exactly where you are. Never write CPA after your name until your state board of accountancy issues your license.
Quantify close speed and accuracy
Controllers care about how fast and how clean the close is. Use numbers like days to close, accounts reconciled, journal entries per month, aged items cleared and audit adjustments. Before and after comparisons, such as 9 days to 5, show improvement better than a list of duties.
Name your ERP and Excel skills
List the systems you have used, such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct or QuickBooks, plus reconciliation tools like BlackLine if you have them. Spell out Excel skills like pivot tables, XLOOKUP and Power Query. Accounting postings name these tools often, and applicant tracking systems match exact terms.
Match public accounting or industry roles
Public accounting resumes should stress audit or tax engagements, client counts and busy season work. Industry resumes should stress the close, reconciliations, reporting and process improvements. Reorder your bullets to match the type of employer in the posting.
Mention controls and audit work
Audit support, internal controls documentation and SOX testing show you can be trusted with the numbers. Give each a scope, such as schedules prepared or controls documented. A result like 'no audit adjustments in assigned areas' is strong evidence of accuracy.
Keep it to one page early in your career
Staff accountants and most senior accountants can fit everything on one page. Put your degree, CPA progress and system skills where they are easy to find. Drop unrelated jobs once you have a few years of accounting experience.
