Tips for writing a social worker resume
Put your license and exam level up front
Social work licenses vary by state, with titles such as LBSW, LMSW, LSW, LCSW and LICSW. List your exact license and the issuing state, or, if you are still waiting, the ASWB exam you plan to take and your expected date. Most states use ASWB exams at the bachelors, masters, advanced generalist or clinical level.
Name your setting, population and caseload
Hospital, child welfare, school, mental health, hospice and community social work are very different jobs. State the setting, population and caseload size for each role, such as '18 to 22 patients on 2 medical-surgical units.' This helps a hiring manager match you to the team.
Show outcomes, not just duties
Use results such as discharge delays reduced, families engaged through a full service plan, benefit applications completed or symptom scores improved. Share only data your agency allows, and never include client names or identifying details.
List the methods and tools you actually use
Name approaches such as motivational interviewing, CBT, trauma-informed care, solution-focused brief therapy or crisis intervention, plus screening tools like the PHQ-9 or C-SSRS. Only list methods you are trained in and use regularly.
New graduates: treat field placements like jobs
List each BSW or MSW field placement with the agency type, hours, population and tasks. Mention supervision by a licensed social worker and any assessments, groups or projects you completed.
Note progress toward clinical licensure
If you are working toward an LCSW, say so in your summary, such as 'accruing supervised clinical hours toward LCSW.' Clinical licensure usually requires supervised post-MSW experience and the ASWB Clinical exam, and the required hours differ by state, so check with your state board.
