Software Engineer resume summary examples
Entry level
Computer science graduate with a 12-week backend internship building Python APIs and 3 full-stack projects in React, Node.js and PostgreSQL. Shipped an internal tool during the internship that saved a support team 10 hours of manual data entry each week. Writes tested, readable code and picks up new stacks quickly.
Experienced
Senior software engineer with 9 years of experience designing distributed systems in Java, Go and AWS for high-traffic consumer products. Led the redesign of a payments platform processing $2B a year, raising availability from 99.9% to 99.99%, and mentors a team of 6 engineers. Strong in system design, incident response and cross-team technical planning.
Career changer
Mechanical engineer moving into software after 2 years of writing Python automation for test labs and completing a 6-month full-stack program. Built a Python tool that cut lab report preparation from 3 hours to 20 minutes, and maintains 4 portfolio projects on GitHub using React, Django and PostgreSQL. Brings engineering discipline in requirements, testing and documentation.

Software Engineer resume bullet points you can adapt
Strong bullets start with an action verb and end with a result. Swap in your own numbers.
- Cut p99 API latency from 820 ms to 210 ms by adding Redis caching and batching PostgreSQL queries in a Go service.
- Migrated 14 services to Kubernetes on Amazon EKS with Terraform and Helm, lowering compute cost by $240K a year.
- Helped hold 99.95% uptime across 9 customer-facing services by defining SLOs, alerts and dashboards in Datadog.
- Reduced mean time to recovery from 47 to 18 minutes by writing runbooks and improving on-call alerting.
- Replaced nightly batch jobs with a Kafka event pipeline, delivering order status updates in under 5 seconds.
- Raised API test coverage from 48% to 85% with pytest and Playwright, cutting production bugs per release by 60%.
- Moved CI/CD from Jenkins to GitHub Actions, reducing build and deploy time from 35 minutes to 9.
- Added composite indexes and rewrote slow PostgreSQL queries, cutting dashboard load time from 6.2 to 1.4 seconds.
- Built React and TypeScript features for an analytics dashboard used by 1,200 business accounts.
- Designed a rate-limiting layer for a public REST API that blocked abusive traffic and cut infrastructure load spikes by 70%.
- Shipped a feature flag system that let the team release 3 times a week instead of once every 2 weeks.
- Moved image processing to AWS Lambda and S3 event triggers, cutting processing cost by 45% and retiring 6 always-on servers.
- Led a zero-downtime PostgreSQL major version upgrade for a 2 TB database serving 5 million users.
- Mentored 3 junior engineers through onboarding and code review, and 2 were promoted within 18 months.

Tips for writing a software engineer resume
Pair every technology with a result
A list of languages tells a reviewer what you have touched, not what you can do with it. Write bullets that name the change you made, the stack you used and the measurable outcome, such as latency, uptime, cost, build time or bugs per release. Pull before and after numbers from your dashboards rather than guessing.
Use the metrics engineering teams already track
Hiring managers recognize p95 and p99 latency, availability percentages, mean time to recovery, deploy frequency and cloud spend. Using these terms shows you think about production systems, not only features. Credit team work accurately with verbs like 'led,' 'built' or 'contributed to.'
Group your skills by type
Split skills into languages, frameworks, data stores, cloud and tooling so a recruiter can scan them in seconds. Spell technologies the way the job posting does, such as 'Amazon EKS' or 'Kubernetes,' because applicant tracking systems match exact terms. Only list tools you could discuss in a technical interview.
Link to code you are proud of
Add GitHub and a portfolio or personal site to your header. Pin 2 or 3 repositories with a clear README, tests and a short note on design choices. Archive half-finished tutorial projects so the first thing a reviewer sees is your best work.
New grads: lead with internships and projects
If you have less than 2 years of experience, put internships and a Projects section above other work. Describe each project like a job, with the problem, the stack, your role and a result such as users, response time or test coverage. Relevant coursework can fill gaps, but shipped projects carry more weight.
Keep it to one page unless you are senior
One page fits most engineers with under about 10 years of experience. Cut older roles to 1 or 2 bullets and drop outdated technologies that are not in the posting. The same rule holds for any engineering resume: lead with results, then tools, then duties.
