25 Resume Objective Examples (and When to Use One)

Updated October 8, 2026 8 min read
Quick answer

Good resume objective examples share one format: a 1 to 2 sentence statement at the top of your resume that names the job you want and the skills you bring to it. Use one when you are a student, changing careers, returning to work or applying for a role your history does not explain. Experienced candidates should use a resume summary instead.

Key takeaways

  • An objective names the job you want and what you offer, while a summary proves your experience with results.
  • Objectives still help students, first-time job seekers, career changers and people returning to work.
  • A strong objective names the exact job title and one or two concrete qualifications.
  • Cut vague goals like "seeking a challenging position with room for growth."

What is a resume objective?

A resume objective, also called a career objective, is a one or two sentence statement at the top of your resume. It sits right below your header and tells the employer what job you want and what you bring to it.

Older objectives focused only on the applicant’s wishes. A modern objective flips that around and focuses on what the employer gets.

Weak: Seeking a position where I can use my skills and grow with a great company.

Strong: CPR-certified high school senior with 150+ volunteer hours leading children’s reading activities. Seeking a summer camp counselor role at Lakeside Day Camp to plan safe, active days for campers ages 6 to 10.

The strong version names the job, the employer and two real qualifications. Every person and employer in this guide is fictional.

Resume objective vs summary: what is the difference?

An objective looks forward to the job you want. A summary looks back at what you have already done. Most people with relevant experience should use a summary.

Resume objectiveResume summary
FocusThe job you want and what you offerYour experience, skills and results
Best forStudents, career changers, returning workersAnyone with relevant experience
Length1 to 2 sentences2 to 4 sentences
Typical opening“Detail-oriented recent graduate seeking…”“Medical assistant with 4 years of…”

If you have a few years of experience in the field you are applying to, skip the objective and use one of these resume summary examples instead.

When does a resume objective still make sense?

An objective earns its place when your work history does not explain why you are applying. Use one in these situations:

  • First job or no work experience. It tells the employer what you want and why you fit. See our guide to a first resume with no experience.
  • Career change. It connects your past to a new field before the reader sees unrelated job titles.
  • Returning to work after a gap. It shows you are ready and current.
  • Relocating. It explains why someone from another city is applying.
  • Internal transfer or promotion. It names the new role you want at the same employer.
  • Internship, apprenticeship or job fair. It states the program or type of role you are after.

How do you write a resume objective?

Use this formula:

[Strength or credential] + [who you are] + [one or two qualifications] + seeking [exact job title] at [company] + [what you will contribute]

  1. Lead with your strongest qualification, such as a certification, a degree or a number.
  2. Name the exact job title from the posting. “Patient care technician” beats “healthcare position.”
  3. Add one concrete detail that proves you fit: hours, a skill, a tool or a result.
  4. End with what you will do for the employer, not what you hope to gain.
  5. Keep it to one or two sentences. Drop “I” and “my” and start with a descriptor or title.

Resume objective mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing on what you want. “Opportunity for growth” helps you, not the employer.
  • Writing something that fits any job. If you could send it to a bakery and a bank, it is too generic.
  • Naming the wrong company. Check the employer name every time you reuse a resume.
  • Running three sentences or more. Long objectives turn into weak summaries.
  • Using “I” and “my.” Implied first person reads cleaner.
  • Using an objective when you have experience. A summary with results will do more for you.

Here is a weak objective rewritten:

Before: Motivated individual seeking a challenging position in a fast-paced environment where I can utilize my skills and advance my career.

After: Organized recent business graduate with a year of part-time bookkeeping experience in QuickBooks Online. Seeking an accounts payable clerk position at Northwind Logistics to process invoices accurately and on time.

Frequently asked questions

Are resume objectives outdated?

The old style is. Objectives that only describe what the applicant wants, like "seeking a rewarding position," have mostly been replaced by summaries. A modern objective that names the role and what you offer still works well for students, career changers and people returning to work.

How long should a resume objective be?

Keep it to one or two sentences, or roughly 25 to 50 words. On the page, that is two to three lines. If it runs longer, you are probably writing a summary.

Where does the objective go on a resume?

Put it directly below your header, before your education or experience. Give it a simple heading such as "Objective" or "Career Objective," or leave the heading off and let the statement sit under your name.

Can I use both an objective and a summary?

Pick one. Using both repeats information and pushes your experience down the page. If you want to state your goal and show your strengths, write a short summary that ends with the job you are targeting.

Should I put the company name in my objective?

Yes, when you are tailoring the resume to one employer. Naming the company shows the resume was written for them. Double-check the name before each application so you never send one employer an objective that names another.
