How much does Walmart pay per hour?
Walmart publishes two average figures, and both land around $18 an hour.
- More than $18.50 an hour. That is the average for a U.S. hourly frontline associate, as listed on Walmart’s careers and “Ask Walmart” pages when we checked them in October 2026.
- $18.00 an hour. That is the average hourly wage across Walmart’s U.S. workforce as of the end of fiscal 2026 (January 31, 2026), from the company’s FY2026 ESG report. The same report puts supply chain associates at $27.50 an hour on average.
The two numbers cover slightly different groups and dates, so treat “about $18 to $18.50” as the fair summary. An average includes long-tenured associates and team leads, so a new hire in an entry-level role will usually start below it.
Walmart also says starting wages for U.S. hourly associates have risen more than 93% since 2015.
Walmart pay by role
Walmart lists pay ranges for its main field roles. Ranges are wide because they cover every market, from rural stores to high-cost cities.
| Role | Pay range | Pay type | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team Associate (stores) | $14 to $37 an hour | Hourly | Walmart careers site, October 2026 |
| Team Lead (Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club) | $19 to $40 an hour, before bonuses | Hourly | Jobs Spotlight Report, July 16, 2026 |
| Sam’s Club associate | $16 to $37 an hour | Hourly | Walmart careers site, October 2026 |
| Distribution and fulfillment centers | $17.85 to $40.40 an hour | Hourly | Walmart careers site, October 2026 |
| Pharmacy technician | $22 an hour on average, up to $40.50 | Hourly | Walmart newsroom, January 28, 2026 |
| Coach | $75,000 to $104,000 total pay | Salaried | Walmart careers site, October 2026 |
| Store Lead | $100,000 to $150,000 total pay | Salaried | Walmart careers site, October 2026 |
| Store Manager | $95,000 to $170,000 base, before bonus and stock | Salaried | Jobs Spotlight Report, July 16, 2026 |
A few notes on reading the table:
- Total pay and base pay differ. The careers site labels its salaried ranges as total pay, while the July 2026 report lists base pay before bonus awards and stock grants. That is why the two store manager figures do not match.
- Your exact offer is on the posting. Walmart says candidates can view pay ranges on all U.S. job postings on careers.walmart.com.
- Pharmacy roles pay more. In January 2026, Walmart said about 3,000 pharmacy roles were moving to an operations team lead title that averages $28 an hour, with potential to earn up to $42 an hour plus bonus.
How do you find the pay for a specific Walmart job?
The ranges above cover the whole country, so the number that matters is the one on the posting for your store. Use these steps before you apply:
- Search the role and city on careers.walmart.com. Walmart says every U.S. job posting shows a pay range.
- Check the local minimum wage. If your state or city sets a higher floor than the bottom of Walmart’s range, the legal minimum wins.
- Note the schedule type. Yearly pay depends on hours as much as on the rate, so look for full-time or part-time in the posting.
- Ask about the schedule. Walmart says store associates can see schedules up to two weeks in advance, and full-time associates can request a fixed schedule of up to 40 hours a week.
Overtime adds to the total. Under federal law, covered nonexempt employees earn at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $18 an hour, each overtime hour pays at least $27.
When an offer comes in, a short question clears up the details:
“Thanks for the offer. Could you confirm the hourly rate, how many hours a week this role is usually scheduled, and when I would be eligible for the 401(k) match and medical coverage?”
What benefits add to Walmart pay?
Hourly pay is only part of what Walmart offers. These benefits come from Walmart’s own pages, checked in October 2026, unless another date is given:
- 401(k) match. You can contribute from your first day. Once eligible, Walmart matches up to 6% of eligible pay for full-time and part-time hourly associates.
- Associate Stock Purchase Plan. Walmart adds a 15% match on the first $1,800 you contribute each plan year.
- Health coverage. Medical coverage starts at $38.30 a paycheck, per the July 2026 Jobs Spotlight Report, and associates get 20 no-cost mental health sessions a year.
- Paid time off. Associates begin earning PTO on day one, and paid time off includes sick leave.
- Family leave. Eligible associates get 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
- Discount and membership. Walmart U.S. associates get 10% off 95% of regularly priced items, including food, and field associates get a free Walmart+ membership.
- Education. Live Better U offers no-cost programs ranging from GED completion to four-year degrees.
A 6% match matters more than it looks. At $18 an hour and 40 hours a week, 6% of a year’s pay is $2,246 in extra retirement money if you contribute at least that much yourself.
How much is Walmart pay per year?
To turn an hourly rate into yearly pay, multiply by your weekly hours and then by 52. The table uses Walmart’s published rates.
| Hourly rate | What it represents | 40 hours a week | 30 hours a week |
|---|---|---|---|
| $14.00 | Bottom of the Team Associate range | $29,120 | $21,840 |
| $18.00 | U.S. average, end of fiscal 2026 | $37,440 | $28,080 |
| $18.50 | Frontline average on the careers site | $38,480 | $28,860 |
| $27.50 | Supply chain average, end of fiscal 2026 | $57,200 | $42,900 |
These are gross figures before taxes, overtime and bonuses. For a full breakdown with take-home pay by state, see what $18 an hour is per year.
How does Walmart pay compare with minimum wage?
Walmart’s $14 floor is nearly double the $7.25 federal minimum wage. In 2026, it is also above the state minimum in many states, including Arkansas, Walmart’s home state, where the Arkansas minimum wage is $11.00.
In higher-wage states the law sets the floor instead. The California minimum wage is $16.90 an hour in 2026, so no store job there can pay $14, and several California cities set even higher local rates. Check the minimum wage in your state before you compare offers.
For an outside benchmark, Bureau of Labor Statistics data for May 2025 puts the national median wage at $17.03 an hour for retail salespersons and $15.81 for cashiers. Walmart’s reported $18.00 to $18.50 averages sit above both medians, though the BLS figures cover every employer, not only large chains.
How can you raise your pay at Walmart?
Walmart publishes several facts about how associates move up:
- First promotion. Walmart says the average promotion comes within about nine months of joining.
- Volume of promotions. More than 160,000 U.S. associates were promoted during fiscal 2026, per the ESG report.
- Leaders who started hourly. About 75% of salaried U.S. store, club and supply chain leaders began as hourly associates, according to the July 2026 report.
- Annual raises. Hourly and most salaried field associates receive annual performance-based raises.
- Education. Walmart says associates who complete a no-cost Live Better U program are three times more likely to be promoted.
The most direct path in stores runs from Team Associate ($14 to $37 an hour) to Team Lead ($19 to $40 an hour before bonuses). Pharmacy technician and supply chain roles also carry higher averages than general store work.
