How much does Starbucks pay per hour?
Starbucks publishes two company-wide numbers, and they measure different things.
- Over $19 an hour in base pay. In an April 25, 2025 statement, Starbucks said average pay for its U.S. hourly partners (the company’s word for employees) was over $19 an hour.
- Over $30 an hour in pay plus benefits. In an April 2, 2026 announcement, Starbucks said average total pay and benefits for hourly partners are valued at more than $30 an hour. That figure includes the value of benefits such as health coverage, stock awards and college tuition, so it is not what lands in your paycheck.
Your own rate depends on the store’s location and your role. Starbucks job postings say new partners are typically hired at the entry point of the posted range, and that the range is based on geography.
Is the $30 an hour figure real pay?
It is real compensation, but most of the difference is not cash. In the same April 2025 statement, Starbucks put average base pay at over $19 and pay plus benefits at over $30, so roughly $11 of each hour is the company’s estimate of what its benefits are worth. You capture that value only when you use them, for example by enrolling in health coverage, contributing enough to the 401(k) to get the match or signing up for the college plan. A partner who skips those benefits takes home the base wage plus tips and any quarterly reward.
What do Starbucks baristas and shift supervisors make?
Starbucks store postings on its careers site list an hourly range. Here is what postings showed when we checked them on October 8, 2026. The yearly column assumes 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.
| Store location | Role | Posted hourly range | Yearly at 40 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas, Texas | Barista | $15.25 to $17.31 | $31,720 to $36,005 |
| Jacksonville, Florida | Barista | $15.25 to $17.31 | $31,720 to $36,005 |
| Dallas, Texas | Shift supervisor | $19.37 to $21.99 | $40,290 to $45,739 |
| Fresno, California | Barista | $20.25 to $22.99 | $42,120 to $47,819 |
| Seattle, Washington | Barista | $21.40 to $24.29 | $44,512 to $50,523 |
Two patterns stand out. A shift supervisor at the Dallas store starts $4.12 an hour above a new barista there. And the top of the Dallas barista range ($17.31) is still below the bottom of the Fresno range ($20.25), so where you work can matter more than where you land within a range.
For context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) counts baristas with fast food and counter workers, whose national median wage was $15.00 an hour in May 2025. First-line supervisors of food preparation and serving workers had a median of $21.19.
What benefits come with Starbucks pay?
Starbucks says its benefits, including health care, are available to part-time partners who average 20 or more hours a week. Our guide to how many hours is part time explains how employers usually draw that line.
The benefits listed in 2026 barista postings include:
- Health coverage: medical, dental and vision plans for you and your family, plus life and disability insurance.
- Paid time off: vacation that starts after an introductory period at up to 40 hours a year (64 hours in California), and sick time accrued at 1 hour for every 25 or 30 hours worked, depending on location.
- Holiday pay: additional pay for working on one of eight observed holidays.
- Retirement and stock: a 401(k) with an employer match, a discounted stock purchase plan and Bean Stock, the company’s equity award program.
- College: 100% upfront tuition coverage for a first-time bachelor’s degree through Arizona State University’s online program, under the Starbucks College Achievement Plan.
- Family support: paid parental leave, family expansion reimbursement and backup care.
Postings note that the list can change through collective bargaining at stores where partners have a union.
How does the Best of Starbucks Reward add to pay?
Starbucks announced a quarterly bonus in April 2026, and on July 13, 2026 it said the program was going live as its fiscal fourth quarter began. Baristas and shift supervisors at eligible coffeehouses can earn up to $300 a quarter, or $1,200 a year, when their store meets sales, operational and customer service targets. Starbucks says it measures stores on sales, staffing, inventory and Grow performance, and it added a points system for attendance.
Spread over a year, the maximum reward is worth:
- About $1.15 an hour at 20 hours a week (1,040 hours)
- About $0.77 an hour at 30 hours a week (1,560 hours)
- About $0.58 an hour at 40 hours a week (2,080 hours)
Starbucks estimates that the reward and expanded tipping together could raise what eligible partners receive by about 5 to 8% on average. At the roughly 5% of U.S. locations where partners have a union, the reward, weekly pay and tipping changes are subject to collective bargaining.
Do Starbucks baristas get tips?
Customers can tip, but tips are not guaranteed. Starbucks already took digital and in-cafe tips, and it added more options starting July 22, 2026, including tipping through Mobile Order & Pay and when customers use Scan & Pay at the register. The company says tips are not guaranteed and vary by location, service and other factors.
Build your budget on your hourly rate and treat tips as extra. Starbucks also moved U.S. partners to weekly pay starting July 31, 2026.
How much does Starbucks pay a year?
Your yearly total depends on hours as much as on rate. Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by 52.
| Hourly rate | 20 hours a week | 30 hours a week | 40 hours a week |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.25 (Dallas barista start) | $15,860 | $23,790 | $31,720 |
| $19.00 (2025 company average) | $19,760 | $29,640 | $39,520 |
| $20.25 (Fresno barista start) | $21,060 | $31,590 | $42,120 |
| $21.40 (Seattle barista start) | $22,256 | $33,384 | $44,512 |
These are gross figures before taxes. To see take-home pay by state at the company average, use the $19 an hour salary breakdown.
How does Starbucks pay compare with minimum wage?
In the three states below, Starbucks starting ranges sit above the legal floor, but by very different margins.
- Texas uses the federal $7.25 minimum, so the Dallas barista start of $15.25 is more than double the floor. See the Texas minimum wage page for the details.
- California’s statewide minimum is $16.90 in 2026, and the Fresno start of $20.25 is $3.35 higher.
- Washington’s statewide minimum is $17.13, and Seattle sets a higher local rate, which helps explain the $21.40 start there.
Check the minimum wage by state table before you compare offers, since many cities set their own higher rates.
How can you raise your pay at Starbucks?
- Move up to shift supervisor. In the Dallas postings, that step added $4.12 an hour at the starting point of each range.
- Add hours. Going from 20 to 30 hours a week at $19.00 adds $9,880 a year, and averaging 20 or more hours keeps you eligible for benefits.
- Help your store hit its targets. The quarterly reward pays up to $1,200 a year when the coffeehouse meets its goals, and attendance now counts.
- Use the college plan. Tuition coverage never shows up in your hourly rate, but it is part of your total pay if you want a degree.
- Compare chains. Our guide to how much McDonald’s pays shows how pay works when franchise owners set wages.
What should you ask before you accept a Starbucks offer?
A posting gives a range, not your rate, so ask for specifics. You can use this script with the store manager:
“Thank you for the offer. Before I accept, could you confirm my starting hourly rate, how many hours a week I can expect, and whether that schedule keeps me at the 20-hour average for benefits? I’d also like to know when this store’s next Best of Starbucks Reward period starts.”
Write the answers down and compare them with the posting. If you have a competing offer, you can ask whether there is room above the entry point, though Starbucks postings say new partners typically start there.
How do you prepare for a Starbucks interview?
Barista postings list no previous experience requirement. They do ask for flexible availability (early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays), cash handling, clear communication and teamwork. Expect questions about customer service, staying calm during a rush and showing up for scheduled shifts.
Practice with the Starbucks interview quiz, which uses questions you are likely to hear based on those published requirements.
Pay and benefits can differ by store and by bargaining agreement, so confirm the posted range and your benefits eligibility with the store manager before you accept.
