  1. You're working as a cashier assistant and spot a case of water on the bottom of a member's cart that wasn't scanned. What do you do?
    • A. Let it go, since bringing it up might embarrass the member in front of the line
    • B. Let the cashier know so it gets rung up, and keep it friendly with the member
    • C. Tell the member they forgot to pay for it and ask them to step aside for a moment
    • D. Mention it to a supervisor once the member has already left the building
    Show the best answer

    B. Costco's Cashier Assistant description includes counting items left in the cart and checking under items so they get scanned. A quick word to the cashier fixes it without making anyone feel accused. Ignoring it costs the warehouse money, and confronting the member turns a simple miss into a scene.

  2. A member is checking out a large order. How should you handle packing?
    • A. Box everything, since boxes are faster than loading loose items back into the cart
    • B. Put it all back in the cart loose, since members can sort it out at their car
    • C. Ask how they'd like it packed, then box or load it their way
    • D. Pack it however the last member wanted, so you stay consistent all shift long
    Show the best answer

    C. Costco's Cashier Assistant description says to determine member packing preferences, and asking takes two seconds. It shows the member you care about how their order gets home. Guessing or using one approach for everyone ignores what they actually want.

  3. A member's card won't scan at the register, and they're in a hurry. What's the best approach?
    • A. Stay calm, apologize, and follow the warehouse's process to look up the membership
    • B. Tell them they need to go to the membership counter and then get back in line
    • C. Ring up the order without a membership, since they look like a regular member
    • D. Ask the member behind them to lend their card so the line can keep moving
    Show the best answer

    A. 'Take care of our members' is part of Costco's Code of Ethics, and a membership problem at checkout is a chance to show it. Following the warehouse's process fixes it properly without bending the rules. Sending them back to start over or skipping the check creates new problems.

  4. The parking lot is full of carts, and a coworker suggests pushing 15 at once to clear it faster. What do you do?
    • A. Try it, since one long trip is faster than making two shorter ones
    • B. Push 15 but walk slowly so the line of carts doesn't tip or swing
    • C. Leave the carts for the next shift, since the lot is too busy right now
    • D. Stick to the limit you were trained on, even if it takes more trips
    Show the best answer

    D. A Costco Cashier Assistant description says to push no more than 10 carts together when bringing them in from the lot. Long cart lines are hard to steer around cars and people. Following the limit takes a little longer but keeps everyone safe.

  5. A member drops a glass jar near the registers and it shatters. What should you do?
    • A. Finish packing your current order first, then come back to clean it up
    • B. Keep people away from it and get it cleaned up right away
    • C. Ask the member who dropped the jar to help you pick up the pieces
    • D. Push the broken glass under the register counter until the rush slows
    Show the best answer

    B. Costco's front end description says to clean spills and trip hazards immediately. Broken glass near a busy checkout can injure members and coworkers, so guarding the area and cleaning it comes first. Asking a member to help or hiding the mess creates new risks.

  6. You're on the early morning stocking crew, and the warehouse opens in 20 minutes. One aisle still has an empty pallet and loose cardboard in it. What do you do?
    • A. Tell your supervisor and help clear the aisle so it's safe before members arrive
    • B. Leave it there, since members can easily walk around one empty pallet
    • C. Keep stocking your own section and let the opening crew deal with the aisle
    • D. Slide the pallet partway under the rack and get back to your stocking
    Show the best answer

    A. Costco says merchandise stocking happens in the early morning hours, so the stocking crew has to leave aisles safe and ready for opening. Telling a supervisor and helping clear it keeps the opening on time. Leaving clutter behind creates a trip hazard for the first members through the door.

  7. At the food court, a member says they received the wrong order and they're annoyed. What's the best response?
    • A. Ask them to get back in line and place their order again from the start
    • B. Explain that the line was long at lunch, so a few mistakes are bound to happen
    • C. Apologize, make it right quickly, and thank them for their patience
    • D. Tell them to talk to a supervisor, since you weren't the one who took the order
    Show the best answer

    C. Food court mistakes are a quick fix, and handling them fast and kindly is what taking care of members looks like. Excuses or passing the member along make a small problem feel bigger. Thanking them for their patience ends the moment on a good note.

  8. A coworker texts you asking you to clock them in because they're running 15 minutes late. What do you do?
    • A. Clock them in, since they'd probably do the same thing for you
    • B. Clock them in this one time, but tell them never to ask you again
    • C. Ignore the text completely so you don't have to deal with the situation
    • D. Say no, and suggest they call the supervisor to let them know
    Show the best answer

    D. 'Obey the law' is the first item in Costco's Code of Ethics, and honest time records are part of following wage and hour rules. Clocking someone else in is dishonest and can cost you both your jobs. Pointing them to the supervisor is the honest way to help.

  9. 'What is your availability?' You can work nights and weekends, but you have class Tuesday and Thursday mornings. What's the best answer?
    • A. Nights and weekends are wide open. Tuesday and Thursday mornings I have class.
    • B. I'd really prefer weekday mornings, since my nights and weekends tend to be busy.
    • C. I'm available anytime, so feel free to schedule me whenever the warehouse needs me.
    • D. It changes from week to week, so I'd need to check before each new schedule comes out.
    Show the best answer

    A. Costco says employees should generally be ready to work its busiest hours, typically nights and weekends, and its postings say open availability is needed. Leading with how open you are, then naming your one real conflict, is honest and easy to schedule. Promising total availability you can't keep causes problems later.

  10. 'Why do you want to work at Costco?' Which answer is strongest?
    • A. I've heard Costco pays well and has good benefits, so it seems like a smart place to apply.
    • B. I shop here every single week, so I already know where almost everything in the warehouse is.
    • C. I want a job where I can stay busy with my hands and don't have to talk to people very much.
    • D. I like busy, hands-on work, and I want to help members on a team that values service.
    Show the best answer

    D. Costco calls member service job number one and says it hires partly on member service skills, so the best answer ties your strengths to that. Pay and benefits are fair reasons, and knowing the store helps, but neither shows what you'd bring. Avoiding people is the wrong signal for a job on the warehouse floor.

What does Costco look for in new employees?

Costco says it selects the best-qualified candidates based on transferable skills, prior experience and member service skills, and its career pages put it plainly: member service is job number one. Its Code of Ethics lists five commitments in order: obey the law, take care of our members, take care of our employees, respect our suppliers, and reward our shareholders. Expect questions about how you treat members, how you work on a busy team, and whether you can be trusted.

Costco also says most candidates are hired into part-time, entry-level jobs such as front end assistant, food court, member service and merchandise stocking. Tailor your opening answer to the job you want.

I've worked a year as a grocery bagger and cart attendant at Contoso Market, so I'm used to fast lines, heavy items and long stretches on my feet. Members always remember whether their order was packed with care, and I take that seriously. I'm looking for a front end job where I can keep learning and grow.

What does the Costco hiring process look like?

You apply online. Costco says each warehouse receives hundreds of applications, and it suggests that after you apply you introduce yourself to a manager at the location you want. Some positions may require you to demonstrate skills or pass a business-related test. Online applications expire after 90 days, so submit a new one if you are still interested and haven't heard back. Costco's job postings also say hires must show proof of authorization to work in the United States.

Hi, I'm Jordan Lee. I applied online last week for a front end assistant position at this warehouse, and I wanted to introduce myself. I'm available nights and weekends, and I'd love the chance to interview.

How would you take care of a member at checkout?

Costco's Cashier Assistant description lists greeting members, asking about their packing preferences, answering questions, mentioning special promotions and thanking them. Show that you do all of it while keeping the line moving. Our cashier interview quiz has more checkout scenarios.

I'd greet the member, help get their items onto the belt, and ask whether they'd like boxes or everything back in the cart. While the cashier scans, I'd check under the cart for large items so nothing gets missed. At the end I'd thank them and offer help loading the car if they have a big order.

How would you handle an unhappy member?

Managers want to hear that you stay calm, apologize and make it right quickly, within the warehouse's process.

At the food counter in my last job, a customer got the wrong order during the lunch rush. I apologized, had the right order made first, and thanked her for her patience. She came back the next week and said hello by name.

How do you keep your area safe and clean?

Costco's front end description says to clean spills and trip hazards immediately and to follow all safety and security procedures, and it limits cart retrieval to no more than 10 carts pushed together. Show that safety is a habit for you, not an afterthought.

If something breaks or spills, I block it off and clean it right away, because members walk through the front end all day. When I bring carts in, I stick to the limit I was trained on, even when the lot is full. A few extra trips are faster than an accident.

How do you work as part of a team in a busy warehouse?

Costco describes warehouse work as challenging work done as a team. Use one real example. The STAR method keeps it focused on situation, task, action and result.

During a holiday weekend at Contoso Market, two cashiers called out. I asked my lead where I'd help most, then ran for price checks, boxes and register supplies so the open lanes kept moving. We got through the rush without closing a single lane.

What is your availability?

Costco says employees should generally be ready to work its busiest hours, typically nights and weekends, and that merchandise stocking happens in the early morning. Its postings also say open availability is needed, apart from religious or disability considerations. Lead with how open you are, then name any real conflict.

Nights and weekends are wide open for me, and I can do early mornings if you need stocking help. My only conflict is Tuesday and Thursday mornings, when I have class until 11.

Why do you want to work at Costco?

Tie your answer to member service and teamwork. Our guide to why do you want to work here has more examples, and how much Costco pays covers typical wages if pay comes up.

I like busy, hands-on work, and I want to be on a team that treats member service as the main job. Every time I shop here, the front end team is fast and friendly at the same time, and I'd like to help keep it that way while I learn other parts of the warehouse.
