Job descriptions

Cashier Job Description for Your Resume

Cashiers take payments for goods and services in grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, general merchandise stores and many other businesses. Beyond the register, many cashiers bag orders, answer questions, sign customers up for rewards programs, watch self-checkout lanes and help stock shelves. Schedules often include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, and part-time work is common.

Quick answer

A cashier job description for a resume covers the work you do at the register: scanning items, taking cash, card and mobile payments, giving correct change, processing returns, checking ID for age-restricted sales and balancing your drawer. Choose the duties that fit your store, start each with a verb, and add numbers like customers per shift and drawer accuracy.

Tips for describing cashier work

Use the numbers managers track

Customers per shift, items scanned per minute, drawer accuracy and loyalty sign-ups are what store managers watch. Use your real figures or careful estimates, and write 'about' when you are not sure.

Match duties to your store type

Grocery, gas station, restaurant and department store registers differ. Mention produce codes, EBT, lottery, drive-thru or gift wrap only if you did them, and use the same terms as the posting.

Show you are trusted with money

Cash handling is a trust job. Mention cash office counts, safe drops, compliance checks or being picked to train new hires, because each one shows a manager trusted you.

Add your availability

Cashier schedules often include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. A short line about when you can work helps a manager picture you on the schedule.

Lead with a summary if you have no experience

For a first job, open with a 2 to 3 sentence summary that mentions math skills, any school or volunteer money handling, and your availability. Then list relevant skills before education.

Frequently asked questions

What duties should I put on a cashier resume?

Include the duties you performed most: scanning and pricing items, taking payments, giving change, balancing your drawer, processing returns, checking ID for age-restricted sales and helping customers. Pick 5 to 7 for each job and add a number to the strongest ones.

What is a good short description of a cashier job for a resume?

Try something like: 'Cashier at a high-volume grocery store who checks out 180+ customers per shift, balances the drawer within $1 and handles returns, coupons and rewards sign-ups.' Change the store type and numbers to match your real job.

Do you need experience to be a cashier?

Usually not. The BLS says cashiers typically need no formal educational credential and are trained on the job, usually for up to a few weeks. Basic math and friendly customer service help you get hired.

How much do cashiers make?

The BLS reports a median hourly wage of $15.81 for cashiers in May 2025. Actual pay depends on your state and city minimum wage, the employer and your shift, so check local postings.
