Quick answer

How many work hours in a year? A standard full-time year has 2,080, or 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. The 2026 calendar has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day. Take out the 11 federal holidays and 2026 has 250 working days and 2,000 work hours. Use the calculator below to change the year, hours per day or holiday setting.

Key takeaways

  • The 2,080-hour standard is 40 hours a week times 52 weeks, the usual basis for converting hourly pay to a salary.
  • 2026 has 261 weekdays and 250 working days after the 11 federal holidays, or 2,000 hours at 8 hours a day.
  • 2027 also has 261 weekdays, but New Year's Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027, which leaves 249 working days.
  • Paid time off and holidays lower the hours you actually work, not the 2,080 paid hours behind a salary.

Holidays follow the federal observance rule: a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday and a Sunday holiday on Monday. Private employers set their own holiday schedules.

How many work hours are in a year?

The standard answer is 2,080 hours. That is a 40-hour week multiplied by 52 weeks, and it is the figure most people use to turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary.

The calendar is a little longer than that. A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus 1 day, and a leap year is 52 weeks plus 2 days. Depending on where those extra days land, a year has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays, which is 2,080, 2,088 or 2,096 hours at 8 hours a day.

Holidays and time off then pull the number of hours you actually work below any of those totals. The calculator above handles all three steps for any year from 2025 to 2028.

How many working days are in 2026?

2026 has 261 weekdays and 250 working days after federal holidays.

Here is the count:

  1. 2026 starts on Thursday, January 1 and has 365 days, which is 52 full weeks plus 1 extra day.
  2. The extra day is Thursday, December 31, so 2026 has 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday.
  3. That gives 52 x 5 + 1 = 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day.
  4. All 11 federal holidays fall on a weekday or are observed on one, so 261 - 11 = 250 working days, or 2,000 hours at 8 hours a day.

2026 federal holidays and observed dates

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists these 11 federal holidays for 2026. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before off, and when it falls on a Sunday, they get the Monday after.

Holiday2026 date (observed)
New Year’s DayThursday, January 1
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.Monday, January 19
Washington’s BirthdayMonday, February 16
Memorial DayMonday, May 25
Juneteenth National Independence DayFriday, June 19
Independence DayFriday, July 3 (July 4 is a Saturday)
Labor DayMonday, September 7
Columbus DayMonday, October 12
Veterans DayWednesday, November 11
Thanksgiving DayThursday, November 26
Christmas DayFriday, December 25

These dates bind federal agencies, not private businesses. The Department of Labor says federal wage law does not require payment for time not worked, such as holidays, and lists holidays off among the things the FLSA does not require. In BLS data for 2025, private industry workers averaged 8 paid holidays, fewer than the 11 above, so check your employer’s own holiday calendar.

2027 needs a closer look because four holidays move:

  • Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) is observed Friday, June 18.
  • Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) is observed Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) is observed Friday, December 24.
  • New Year’s Day 2028 (Saturday, January 1) is observed Friday, December 31, 2027.

That last one is why 2027 has 12 holiday days off in the calendar year. If your employer does not observe it until 2028, 2027 has 250 working days and 2,000 hours, the same as 2026.

Work hours in a year by weekly schedule

Not everyone works 40 hours. This table spreads each schedule across five weekdays and shows the yearly total three ways.

If you work a 32-hour week as four 8-hour days instead, use 8 hours per day in the calculator above and expect fewer working days. Our guides on how many hours is full time and how many hours is part time explain which of these schedules count as full time for benefits.

How does PTO change your work hours in a year?

Paid time off changes the hours you work, not the hours you are paid for. A salaried employee on 2,080 paid hours who takes a week of paid vacation still gets the full salary, but works 40 fewer hours.

Here is a 2026 example using BLS averages for private industry: 8 paid holidays (2025 data) and 11 paid vacation days after one year of service (March 2026 data).

StepDaysHours at 8 per day
Weekdays in 20262612,088
Minus 8 paid holidays2532,024
Minus 11 vacation days2421,936

Example: Jordan Lee earns $52,000 a year at Contoso, which is $25 an hour on the 2,080-hour standard. With 8 holidays and 11 vacation days, Jordan works about 1,936 hours in 2026. Divide the salary by hours actually worked and the effective rate is about $26.86 an hour.

Sick days, unpaid leave and any extra holidays your employer gives push the worked total lower still. To see how much leave you build up per pay period, try the PTO calculator.

For the conversion in the other direction, our $25 an hour salary page shows the yearly, monthly and take-home figures for that wage.

Why does the federal government use 2,087 hours?

OPM says the old 2,080-hour divisor assumed a year of exactly 52 weeks, which real calendars are not. A 1981 GAO study found that the calendar repeats over a 28-year cycle, and the average across that cycle is about 2,087.14 hours a year:

  • 4 years with 2,096 hours (262 weekdays)
  • 17 years with 2,088 hours (261 weekdays)
  • 7 years with 2,080 hours (260 weekdays)

Federal agencies divide annual salaries by 2,087 to get hourly rates. Private employers set their own method, so check your offer letter or pay stub if the math matters to you.

Does a leap year have more work hours?

Not always. A leap year has 366 days, which is 52 weeks plus 2 days, and the extra days only add work hours when they land on weekdays.

YearFirst dayDaysWeekdaysHours at 8 per day
2024Monday3662622,096
2028Saturday3662602,080
2032Thursday3662622,096

2028 is the next leap year, but because its two extra days are a Saturday and a Sunday, it has fewer weekdays than 2026 or 2027. A year only reaches 262 weekdays when it is a leap year that starts on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

For scale, a common year has 8,760 total hours (365 x 24) and a leap year has 8,784. A 2,080-hour work year fills about 23.7 percent of a common year.

How many work hours are in a month and a week?

A 40-hour schedule averages 173.3 hours a month (2,080 / 12) and 40 hours a week. Actual months run from 152 to 176 hours in 2026, as the monthly table above shows.

For health coverage, the IRS uses a monthly line of its own: 130 hours of service in a month makes an employee full time under the Affordable Care Act. That equals 30 hours a week over a year.

How to use the calculator above

  1. Pick a year. The calculator covers 2025 through 2028 and counts every weekday in that year.
  2. Set your hours per workday. Use 8 for a 40-hour week, 7.5 for 37.5 hours, or 7 for 35 hours.
  3. Choose whether to exclude federal holidays. Leave the box checked to remove the observed federal holidays, or uncheck it if you work them.
  4. Read the results. You get working days, total work hours, weekdays and the number of holidays that land on weekdays, plus the list of observed dates.

Your employer’s own holiday calendar may differ from the federal list, so subtract or add days to match it. For salary conversions at different hour totals, see the annual salary to hourly tables.

Frequently asked questions

How many working days are in 2026?

2026 has 261 weekdays. Subtracting the 11 federal holidays, which all fall on or are observed on weekdays, leaves 250 working days. Private employers set their own holiday calendars, so your count may be higher or lower.

How many work hours are in 2026?

At 8 hours a day, 2026 has 2,088 hours across all 261 weekdays, or 2,000 hours after the 11 federal holidays. A 52-week year at 40 hours a week, the standard used for salary conversions, is 2,080 hours.

How many working days are in 2027?

2027 has 261 weekdays. Its 11 federal holidays all land on weekdays once observed dates are applied, and New Year's Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. Counting all 12 days off leaves 249 working days and 1,992 hours at 8 hours a day.

Why does the federal government use 2,087 hours instead of 2,080?

OPM explains that 2,080 assumes a year of exactly 52 weeks, but real years have 365 or 366 days. Averaged over the 28-year calendar cycle, a full-time schedule works out to about 2,087 hours a year, so federal agencies use that figure to compute hourly rates.

How many hours a year is part time?

It depends on the schedule. Twenty hours a week for 52 weeks is 1,040 hours a year, and 30 hours a week is 1,560. The ACA's monthly full-time line of 130 hours equals 1,560 hours a year.
